BOOK COVERS

I took some time during COVID to design book covers. I wanted to experiment and practice my skills in photography, illustration, layout, and typography while maintaining context of the work inside.

CHARCOAL MAGAZINE

EDITORIAL

Before I went to the Philippines, my friends warned me to be careful because foreigners were portrayed as wealthy. So, for months, I kept to myself to avoid attention. Eventually, my mouth slipped.

The following night my house was broken into while my family and I were asleep. I never got any rest since. In order to distract myself, I designed this magazine about this experience and more from the Philippines.

FALLEN SCOOPS

BRANDING

For class I was tasked with designing Fallen Scoops’ branding system. The challenge being it was collage-based since it was the most interesting way to push on the concept: ice cream for devil worshippers, punk-inspired collage, and humor among the horror.

The logo, most of the typography, and graphic elements were hand-drawn. The collaged elements came from really old newspapers from a local bookstore and were further customized for more depth. The system is set up where only new information such as names of staff members can be easily edited.

COLORLESS

BOOK COVER

Haruki Murakami had his protagonist, Tsukuru Tazaki, go through a pilgrimage that started from the edge of despair. Within Tsukuru’s friend group, each member had a color in their name—while he branded himself “colorless” for lacking. For reasons hidden from him, Tsukuru was exiled without warning.

I referenced Japanese manga with screen tones and laid out the colored elements separate from a band of empty space (Tsukuru) and a grisly train. This train, a recurring motif and Tsukuru’s passion, wraps around the book.

PAHALA COFFEE

PACKAGING

Pahala Coffee is an imaginary company based in Pahala, a volcanic region of Hawaii. I came up with 3 pillars for the brand: smoky, organic, and textural.

These pillars represent an instance from Pahala’s history: when sugarcane was their main export. Laborers would stuff imperfect sugarcane with hala leaves and burn them.

JAG MAGAZINE

EDITORIAL

While on an island tour in the Philippines, I imagined my canoe tipping over a herd of sea urchins. If that didn’t get me, I would have probably drowned anyway because I can’t swim. Jag Magazine was born from those fears—a travel magazine with a hint of danger.

“Jag” means sharp and it’s also short for a Jaguar ready to pounce. If you’re not careful out there, you could put yourself in danger. The feature in this issue tells the story of a mother who almost lost her children while on a rafting trip.

JAG➔ZINE

Influenced by horror, graffiti, zine and Japanese culture, Passion injects the digital world with a style of extremes: controlled-chaos, clean grunge, and bold-hushed. He’s always hungry and whatever he bites—he leaves his mark.
